JetPack is one the most widely used plugin on WordPress. Sometimes a user may encounter an error, “cookie nonce is invalid” while working with it. In this post, I will talk about how to solve this error.
Many users consider JetPack to be quite heavy and blame it for slowing the website. Often one will find suggestions to deactivate and uninstall JetPack to resolve an issue. However I consider it to be a useful plugin. One can go through my post on “Whether to Install WordPress Jetpack Plugin on your site?” to know the areas where JetPack has utility.
Reasons
I am enclosing a snapshot of the error message below. This error I got while trying to update the settings of JetPack.
The error can happen due to any of the following reasons:-
- Certain security plugins, for example All In One WP Security plugin, have feature to automatically log out a user after certain time. Hence it may happen that we are updating settings of JetPack and forced log out has happened from behind. The error “cookie nonce is invalid” will surface as the page is not refreshed.
- The error sometimes is result of inconsistency due to pending update in JetPack.
- JetPack is not a single plugin but collection of plugins as it has features like stats, subscriptions, comment, site monitoring etc in it. Often we will find a better plugin for a specific task. However the new plugin may clash with JetPack settings resulting in manifestation of errors like “cookie nonce is invalid”.
- Any changes made in WordPress files by a user.
Solutions
The solutions simply follow the reasons for error. In order to solve the issue, try the following:-
- Refresh the settings page of JetPack or login again after log out.
- Update all the plugins including JetPack.
- Disable the features of JetPack which are not is use. For example subscriptions, comments etc.
- Undo any change made in WordPress files.
I hope the above steps will solve the issue. If the error still persists, then please let me know. I will try my best to help you out.
Best of luck!
Thanks, Sancheya, this guide worked for my problem. Now my web is running normally again 🙂

Hi,
I don’t know when you wrote this post, but I need help with this. I tried your steps into resolving the cookie nonce failure but nothing worked. Everything I am trying to do with Jetpak just gives me the error message “Error updating settings. Cookie nonce is invalid (Status 403)” and it has broken my site.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this?
Thank you,
Amanda
