Personal Experience: Best Free Screen Recorder for Windows 10

Digital transformation is happening in all spheres of life with the advent of faster communication technologies. The pace of this transformation has further accelerated after COVID-19 and subsequent restrictions. Nowadays, online meetings are becoming a norm in all activities like office work, school education, training, medical consultation, etc. Often, we feel the need to take a snapshot of important slides during such meetings. Further, for school kids, the recording of a live online class lecture or a portion of it can be used later for revision. The need for capturing also arises for video content generation for YouTube channels or other online platforms. To cover all these requirements, I will share my personal experience with a free screen recorder tool from Microsoft for capturing screen in this post.

Types of Capturing Needed

Initially, our expectations from a tool may be limited as we are just looking for our immediate requirements. However, as we start using the tool or with time, we feel the need for additional features. As a result, we often have to begin the quest again for a tool satisfying all our requirements. Hence, we should start with a bigger picture in mind while searching for any product. Given this, I will first describe the types of capturing that is possible these days

  • Screen capturing with a feature to record a specific window, screen, or region.
  • Ability to control the quality and frame per second (FPS) of recording to optimize the size of the output file.
  • Webcam capture.
  • Audio recording of a speaker and/or microphone.

All the above features are present in a tool, Screen Recorder Pro, which we discuss next.

The product is available for free on the Microsoft store for screen capturing and audio recording. It is fully reliable, being from Microsoft itself. However, as per the system requirements of the tool, it can function only on Windows 10. If one is unable to locate it on Microsoft Store, then here is the link to get it.

Click on the button ‘Get’ to install the tool on our system. Once the installation is complete, we can open the tool to start using it. Next, I describe its features in brief in order to enable you to make up your mind.

Screen Recorder Features

  1. Pause Video: We can pause the video while recording the screen with this tool. I have observed that many available software programs don’t provide this functionality in their free version.
  2. Only Audio recording: We can enable audio-only recording with the tool by choosing no screen/window to record.
  3. Audio recording flexibility: Under the drop-down menu for Audio, we have several options to customize the recording. We can choose audio input/output devices to record and enable a separate file for each device. Further, we can even set the quality of the audio recording.
  4. Webcam recording: Under the drop-down menu, we can choose the webcam device to record. Further, we can enable an option for a separate file for webcam recording.
  5. Single-button Screenshot: Once we open the tool, we have a single button screenshot possible by pressing the ‘PrtScr’ button, which automatically saves the shot on a computer drive. Further, we can enhance the captured image with the inbuilt image editor.

From the above discussion, we can conclude that the tool is feature-rich. I will strongly suggest it if you are looking for a free tool.

Summary

In this post, I shared my experience of using a tool, Screen Recorder Pro, available on Microsoft Store for free to capture screen and audio/video devices. It has a lot of features and options available for users, which makes it very productive.
